Isabgol Or Psyllium Fiber Great Source Of Dietary Fiber

Plantago ovata contains psyllium or isabgol which is a great source of dietary fiber and has amazing medicinal uses. Apart from helping in improve and maintain the Gastro-intestinal transit by providing regular dietary supplement, it is also helpful in reliving irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, and also diarrhea.

Psyllium and its Uses:

Psyllium is obtained from the mucilage, the colorless gelling substance, of the seed coat; it is obtained from the grinding of the seed coat. Uses of Psyllium fiber:
  • The Psyllium is highly soluble in nature; it absorbs and swells in water. It helps increase the moisture content in stool, which facilitates the bowel mobility. Thus it has been in use in Ayurvedic medicine for ages as a remedy for constipation.
  • Psyllium has advantages over other fibers like wheat bran and cellulose; it is highly soluble and helps in controlling the cholesterol levels. Isabgol forms a thin layer on the intestine to prevent cholesterol from being absorbed into arteries.
  • It helps in maintaining required blood sugar levels and improves insulin response by decreasing the absorption of glucose and fats.
  • It is also a great remedy for long run problems like Piles, fissure, fistulas and chronic constipation. Also helps to lessen the pain during defection for people suffering from heart diseases, hernia and pregnant females.

The food which most of us take do not contain enough fiber which is highly essential for a healthy body, the insufficient intake of fiber causes problems like Cholesterol, indigestion, overweight, gastritis, etc. It is recommended that psyllium in 1 gram to 5 grams with every meal should be consumed to provide the required fiber intake.
